tert-Butyl alcohol                            75-65-0           <3%            F, Xn                        R11, R20

3. HAZARDS IDENTIFICATION:
HARMFUL BY INHALATION:

High exposures by inhalation will cause anaesthetic effects. This may result in loss of consciousness and could prove fatal if exposure has been severe.

DANGEROUS FOR THE OZONE LAYER

4. FIRST AID MEASURES:
GENERAL:

Show this safety data sheet to the doctor in attendance. It is good practice in industrial hygiene to avoid contact with, solvents  by using appropriate protective measures whenever possible.

INHALATION:

Move the exposed person to fresh air at once. Perform artificial respiration if breathing has stopped. Keep the affected person warm and at rest. Get prompt medical attention. When breathing is difficult, properly trained personnel may assist affected person by administering 100% oxygen. DO NOT induce vomiting. Get medical attention immediately. Promptly let affected drink lots of water to dilute the swallowed chemical. DO NOT give the  victim anything to drink if he is unconscious.

EYE CONTACT:

Promptly wash eyes with lots of water while lifting the eye lids. Continue to rinse for at least 15 minutes and get  medical attention.

SKIN:

Remove affected person from source of contamination. Promptly wash contaminated skin with soap or mild detergent and  water. promptly remove clothing if soaked immediately.

5. FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES:
Non-flammable under normal conditions of handling and use.

EXTINGUISHING MEDIA:

Water spray, fog or mist, carbon dioxide (CO2), dry chemicals, sand, dolomite etc.

SPECIAL FIRE FIGHTING PROCEDURES:

Keep run-off water out of sewers and water sources. Dike for water control. Cool containers exposed to flames with water from the side until well after the fire is out. Stay away from ends of tanks. if water pollution occurs, notify appropriate authorities. In the case of fire, wear self contained breathing apparatus.

UNUSUAL FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARDS:

May explode in a fire. May develop highly toxic or corrosive fumes if heated.

HAZARDOUS DECOMPOSITION PRODUCTS:

Very toxic gases/vapours/fumes of phosgene (COCl2). Very corrosive gases/vapours/fumes of hydrogen chloride (HCl).

6. ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES:
SPILL CLEANUP METHODS:

Collect with absorbent, non-combustible material into suitable containers. Clean-up personnel  should use respiratory and/or liquid contact protection. Provide ventilation and confine spill. Do not allow runoff to sewer. keep people away from and upwind of spill/leak.

7. HANDLING AND STORAGE:
USAGE PRECAUTIONS:

Keep away from heat, sparks and open flame. Avoid spilling, skin and eye contact. Ventilate well, avoid  breathing vapours. Use approved respirator if air contamination is above accepted level.
Wear full protective clothing for prolonged exposure and /or high concentrations. Vapours are heavier than air and can cause suffocation by reducing, oxygen available for breathing.

STORAGE PRECAUTIONS:

Keep in cool, dry, ventilated storage and closed containers. Keep containers closed tightly.

8. EXPOSURE CONTROLS AND PERSONAL PROTECTION:

PROTECTIVE GLOVES:

Use protective gloves made of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), viton rubber (fluor rubber).

EYE PROTECTION:

Wear chemical safety goggles were eye exposure is reasonably probable.

OTHER PROTECTION:

Use engineering controls to reduce air contamination to permissible level. Provide eyewash station and  safety shower. Wear appropriate clothing to prevent repeated or prolonged skin contact. When using, do not eat, drink or smoke.
